We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Material Inspector

Location: Port Harcourt, Rivers
Employment Type: Contract
Function: Materials Quality, Receiving Inspection, and Traceability
Reports to: Materials/QA/QC Engineer / Procurement Quality Lead
Supervises: None

Role Purpose

  • Verify that purchased and delivered materials and equipment conform to purchase orders, specifications, approved drawings, certificates, and preservation requirements, with full traceability from manufacture through receipt, storage, issue, and installation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform or witness source and receiving inspections for pipes, fittings, flanges, plates, structural steel, valves, welding consumables, coatings, fasteners, and equipment.
  • Prepare receiving reports, inspection releases, punch lists, NCR inputs, and complete supporting records for QA dossiers.
  • Maintain material traceability and prevent commingling, substitution, damage, expiry, or use of unapproved material.
  • Witness positive material identification, dimensional checks, hardness, impact, destructive or non-destructive tests when specified.
  • Verify storage, preservation, segregation, environmental protection, shelf-life control, and issue practices at warehouses and laydown areas.
  • Verify quantity, dimensions, grade, heat/batch numbers, markings, physical condition, packaging, and conformity with approved documents.
  • Review purchase orders, material requisitions, technical specifications, data sheets, approved vendor documents, inspection assignments, and release notes.
  • Identify non-conforming or damaged materials, control quarantine status, and coordinate technical disposition and reinspection.
  • Review material test certificates and certificates of conformity for chemical, mechanical, heat-treatment, testing, and code compliance.

Key Performance Measures

  • Non-conforming material contained before issue or installation
  • Receiving inspections completed within target time
  • Preservation and shelf-life compliance
  • Materials accepted without later traceability gaps
  • Complete MTC and release records available for handover

Qualifications and Experience
Minimum Requirements:

  • Ability to interpret material specifications, MTCs, ASTM/ASME grades, dimensional standards, and purchase-order requirements.
  • Competence with basic dimensional tools and material-identification methods.
  • Experience with traceability systems, preservation, non-conforming-material control, and vendor documentation.
  • Typically 5 or more years of materials inspection, vendor inspection, receiving inspection, or procurement quality experience.
  • HND or Bachelor’s Degree in Materials/Metallurgical, Mechanical, Welding, Production, or a related engineering discipline.

Preferred Certifications and Standards Knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of relevant ASTM materials standards, ASME specifications, API requirements, and client preservation standards.
  • Welding inspector or API certification is desirable for piping and pressure-equipment materials.
  • ASNT/ISO 9712 Level II or PMI/materials inspection training is advantageous.

  • External interfaces: Vendors, freight/logistics providers, third-party inspectors, testing laboratories, and client materials representatives.
  • Internal interfaces: Procurement, warehouse, engineering, construction, QA/QC, logistics, preservation, and document control teams.
