Job Description


  • The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood and other specimen samples from patients in a safe, accurate, and professional manner while ensuring patient comfort and adherence to infection prevention and quality standards.
  • The role also involves proper specimen labeling, documentation, transportation, and maintaining high standards of patient care and confidentiality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect blood samples through venipuncture and capillary puncture following established procedures.
  • Verify patient identity and confirm test requests before specimen collection.
  • Explain collection procedures to patients to reduce anxiety and ensure cooperation.
  • Label specimens accurately and complete all required documentation.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, and transportation of specimens to the laboratory.
  • Adhere to infection prevention and control protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the phlebotomy area and equipment.
  • Monitor patients for adverse reactions during and after blood collection and provide appropriate assistance when necessary.
  • Maintain adequate stock levels of phlebotomy supplies and report shortages.
  • Ensure proper disposal of sharps and biohazard waste according to safety regulations.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with data protection policies.
  • Collaborate effectively with laboratory personnel, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in quality assurance, continuous improvement, and accreditation activities.
  • Attend mandatory training and comply with the diagnostic centre's policies and procedures.

Requirements
Qualifications:

  • Candidates should possess an HND, OND, BSc in Phlebotomy, Medical Laboratory Technology, or a related healthcare discipline.
  • Registration with the relevant professional regulatory body (where applicable).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is an added advantage.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 1–2 years of experience as a Phlebotomist in a hospital, diagnostic centre, or medical laboratory.
  • Experience using Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) is an added advantage.
