We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Mechanical & Piping Consultant Engineer

Location: Lagos
Position Type: Full-Time

Job Objectives

  • To oversee, review, and consolidate independent field verification data and technically evaluate mechanical and piping variations, contract baselines, and final accounts.
  • The role acts as the primary analytical bridge between raw on-site technical inspection data (60% site presence) and the generation of the sound audit reports (40% office presence) delivered directly to the Lead Auditor to protect the Employer against unjustified financial exposure or unjustified overrun costs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and Evaluate and precomissioning packages for contractors who have completed their mechanical and piping scopes of work.
  • Audit and approve photographic and video records compiled by the Associate Mechanical Engineers to ensure auditrule compliance and tracability for the Document Control Center (DC).
  • Critically evaluate and technically challenge the engineering basis for variation claims submitted by contractors, verifying their validity against contract terms.
  • Direct field spot-checks on system hydrotests, and material laydown traceability logs to ensure contractor invoices perfectly map to physical field boundaries.
  • Conduct technical evaluations of IFC drawings, contract Bills of Quantities (BOQ), and project specifications to detect variations and unauthorized design changes.
  • Collaborate directly with the Quantity Surveying Team , the Contract Manager , and Quality & Audit Manager to convert technical field anomalies into formal commercial dispute defenses.
  • Compile, analyze, and draft professional Daily Reports, Weekly Progress, and Monthly Audits Reports, detailing non-conformity impacts, and contract validation opinions for submission to the Lead Mechanical Auditor.
  • Collaborate directly with the Quantity Surveying Team , the Contract Manager , and Quality & Audit Manager to convert technical field anomalies into formal commercial dispute defenses.
  • Lead on-site physical auditing of rotating and plant equipment installation, static equipment alignment, and process piping networks to verify actual progress against contractor claims.
  • Supervise and sign off on the field progress quantities, welding visual inspections, and other inspection performed by the Associate Mechanical Engineers.

Work Conditions:

  • Heavy industrial construction site within the Dangote Free Zone. Must be willing to walk across the site, including active swampy / reclaimed areas, elevated platforms, and confined spaces.
  • Standard project hours, but must be flexible to align with contractor shift patterns for critical audit verifications (e.g., nighttime hydro-tests)
  • Basic PPE (safety shoes, helmets, gloves, goggles) are required at site.

KPI's

  • 100% of Daily, Weekly, and Monthly Technical Audit reports compiled, finalized, and pushed to the Lead Auditor within agreed contractual reporting windows.
  • Measurable financial savings achieved for the Employer by identifying and successfully throwing out unsupported or unverified contractor reported progress or variation claims.
  • 100% of consolidated audit packages containing verified field data, physical measurements, and photographic back-ups matching the standards of 3rd party scrutiny.
  • Zero-defect tolerances on baseline quantity verifications executed under supervision by reporting Associate Mechanical Engineers.

Requirements
Education:

  • COREN / NSE / Managerial & Supervision Training Certification
  • Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) or Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized institution.

Experience:

  • 7 to 10 years of progressive field engineering and project control experience within Oil & Gas, Refinery, or major Petrochemical EPC environments. Typical Experience in Fertilizer, heavy industrial factories is acceptable. Minimum of 2 - 3 years spent in a dedicated technical auditing, quantity surveying, or contractual claims role.

Skills & Capabilities:

  • Writing professional technical proposals and audit report
  • Working Knowledge in AutoCAD , HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Microsoft Excel (Advanced Data Modeling), BIM modeling platforms, and document management system.
  • Willingness to learn, take feedback, training and teaching subordinates, and developing consulting supervison skills
  • Expert working knowledge of international standards including ASME B31.3 (Process Piping), ASME Section VIII (Pressure Vessels), API 598, API 610/660, and associated welding/testing specifications.

Deliverables (Added Advantage):

  • Contract Management Training Courses.
  • Prior experience in a QA / QC auditing role
  • PMP / PRINCE II
