Job Title: Mechanical & Piping Associate Engineer

Location: Lagos
Position Type: Full-Time

Role Summary

  • To provide independent, on-site technical verification and auditing of mechanical and piping construction activities. To ensure that contractor payment claims, variation requests, and engineering technical sign-offs are commercially justified, physically accurate, fully traceable, and defensible to IPMC Auditing Best Practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Verify welding activities prior, in process, and post welding visual inspection for Butt and fillet welds for both structure and piping.
  • Conduct physical site verification and quantification to independently verify contractors’ Quantity Take-Offs (QTOs) for mechanical equipment (static/rotating) and piping networks against contract BOQ and IFC drawings.
  • Immediately flag any non-conformities, safety infractions, or suspected fraudulent billing practices to the Consultant and Quality & Audit Manager.
  • Audit piping & mechanical material at wherahouse and laydown yards to verify the physical existence and traceability of claimed materials (e.g., pipes, valves, flanges).
  • Assist the Mechanical & Piping Consultant and Quantity Surveying Team in evaluating and challenging Variation Claims by providing factual field evidence and technical data
  • Gather, log, and archive photographic / video evidence of high-value installations to build an evidence chain for the Document Control Center (DC).
  • Audit Hydro-test , service test, and Pneumatic-test packages to verify that the boundaries tested match the volumes/lengths the contractor is invoicing for.
  • Ensure all site audit findings are formally documented and reported officially to the consultant engineer to maintain strict traceability from Contract Award ? BOQ / IFC ? Site Verification ? Payment Certificate.
  • Verify the physical existence and installation status of static equipment (columns, vessels, heat exchangers) and rotating equipment (pumps, compressors) against the contractor’s statement.
  • Cross-reference contractor daily site diaries, manpower, and progress reports with actual physical site conditions observed in the field.
  • Perform spot-checks and audits on critical mechanical works explicitly mandated in the Scope Of Work / Work Order, including piping componenets (Pipes and fittingd), supports, bolting torque verification, and valve installations

Work Conditions:

  • Standard project hours, but must be flexible to align with contractor shift patterns for critical audit verifications (e.g., nighttime hydro-tests)
  • Heavy industrial construction site within the Dangote Free Zone. Must be willing to walk across the site, including active swampy / reclaimed areas, elevated platforms, and confined spaces.
  • Basic PPE (safety shoes, helmets, gloves, goggles) are required at site.

KPI's

  • Zero defect rate in independent quantity validation (Target: 100% accuracy in verifying contractor QTYs against physical site reality).
  • Timeliness : 100% of assigned field audit reports submitted within the monthly payment certification cycle.
  • Number of unsupported contractor claims / variations identified and successfully challenged based on field evidence gathered.
  • Audit Trail Quality: 100% of field verification packets compiled to meet the "traceability and auditability" IPMC best practices.

Requirements
Education:

  • COREN / NSE
  • Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) or Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized institution.

Experience:

  • 3 to 5 years of direct field experience in Oil & Gas, Petrochemical, or Heavy Infrastructure EPC projects, specifically focused on mechanical equipment erection and piping construction.

Skills & Capabilities:

  • Working Knowledge in AutoCAD , HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems.
  • Section VIII, API 1104, API 5L , API 570 , API 574, and API 598 , API 610 / 660, etc.).
  • Writing professional technical reports and proposals
  • Familiarity of international mechanical / piping codes and standards (ASME B31.3, ASME
  • Willingness to learn, take feedback, and develop consulting skills

Deliverables (Added Advantage):

  • Prior experience in a QA / QC auditing role
  • PMP
  • Revit and general BIM (Building Information Modeling)
  • Certified Welding Inspector or equivalent NDT Level II certification is highly preferred.

Core Competencies (Behavioral & Technical):

  • Must possess the psychological resilience to challenge contractor personnel and politely push back against PMT / Consultant representatives without compromising relationships or being influenced.
  • Understanding that if a verification activity is not documented and photographed, from IPMC's perspective, it did not happen.
  • Ability to trace a single valve from the site delivery receipt to its physical installation point, and finally to the contractor's invoice line item.
  • Must understand that a technical issue (e.g., a missing pipe support) directly translates to a financial risk (unjustified payment).
