Gonzaga Jesuit College - Founded in 2021 in Okija, Anambra State, Gonzaga Jesuit College is the fourth Jesuit secondary school in Nigeria, following those in Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Lagos. We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: History Teacher

Location: Okija, Anambra
Employment Type: Full-time

Job Description

  • The History Teacher is responsible for helping students understand past events, societies, and cultures, and how they shape our present world.
  • The role focuses on building critical thinking, analyzing primary and secondary sources, and developing strong historical research and writing skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Classroom Management: Foster an open, respectful classroom culture where students feel comfortable debating and discussing complex historical and social topics.
  • Assessment & Feedback: Design and grade essays, research projects, and exams that measure both factual knowledge and analytical skills.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Regularly update parents and school administrators on student progress and participate in departmental curriculum planning.
  • Lesson Delivery: Plan and teach engaging history lessons that cover required historical eras, civil rights, geography, and political structures.
  • Critical Thinking Development: Guide students in evaluating historical evidence, recognizing bias, and understanding cause-and-effect relationships.

Requirements
Education & Experience:

  • Degree: Bachelor’s Degree in History, Secondary Education (with a social studies/history focus), or a related field.
  • Experience: 3 years of classroom teaching experience is generally preferred, though strong student-teaching portfolios are well-regarded for entry-level roles.
  • Certification: A valid teaching license or regulatory certification required by the local educational board.

Required Skills:

  • Technology Integration: Experience using digital archives, educational media, and learning management systems (LMS) to enrich lessons.
  • Subject Expertise: Comprehensive knowledge of world history, regional history, civics, and historical research methodologies.
  • Storytelling & Engagement: Strong public speaking and narrative skills to make historical events vivid and relevant to students.
  • Analytical Guidance: Ability to teach students how to analyze documents, map data, and write clear, thesis-driven essays.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Empathy and objectivity when handling sensitive or controversial historical topics.

Other Requirements:

  • Professional Development: Commitment to ongoing training, attending history education workshops, and maintaining active teaching credentials.
  • Extracurricular Support: Willingness to advise student groups, such as debate clubs, history societies, or mock trial teams, and assist with school field trips.
  • Background Clearance: Mandatory clean criminal record check and child protection vetting.

Remuneration & Benefits

  • Standard Benefits: Includes comprehensive health insurance, retirement or pension plans, paid sick and annual leave, and funding for professional development.
  • Salary: Minimum of N150,000 / monthly.
