Job Summary

The Assistant Accountant supports the Accountant in managing the organisation’s financial records, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely reporting of financial transactions.
The role involves assisting with bookkeeping, preparing financial reports, handling accounts payable and receivable, and maintaining proper financial documentation.
The Assistant Accountant must be detail-oriented, organised, and capable of working in a fast-paced business environment.

Job Responsibilities

Financial Record Management:

  1. Assist in maintaining accurate and up-to-date financial records.
  2. Record daily financial transactions, including income, expenses, and payments.
  3. Ensure proper filing and documentation of all financial records.

Accounts Payable and Receivable:

  1. Assist in processing invoices and payments promptly.
  2. Monitor accounts receivable and follow up on outstanding payments.
  3. Support reconciliation of vendor and customer accounts.

Financial Reporting:

  1. Assist in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
  2. Support the preparation of profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports.
  3. Provide necessary financial data for management review.

Budgeting and Cost Control:

  1. Support the preparation and monitoring of budgets.
  2. Track expenses and report any variances.
  3. Assist in implementing cost control measures.

Bank and Cash Management:

  1. Assist in performing bank reconciliations.
  2. Support monitoring of cash flow and daily cash balances.
  3. Maintain petty cash records and ensure accountability.

Tax and Regulatory Compliance:

  1. Assist in ensuring compliance with tax regulations and statutory requirements.
  2. Support preparation of tax filings (VAT, PAYE, etc.).
  3. Maintain proper records for regulatory purposes.

Audit and Internal Control:

  1. Support internal and external audit processes.
  2. Help maintain effective internal control systems.
  3. Identify discrepancies and report issues to the Accountant.

Payroll Support:

  1. Assist in payroll preparation and processing.
  2. Ensure accuracy of salary calculations and deductions.

Documentation and Reporting:

  1. Maintain proper financial documentation and audit trails.
  2. Prepare periodic financial summaries and reports.
  3. Track basic financial performance indicators.

Process Improvement and Efficiency:

  1. Support improvements in accounting processes and systems.
  2. Ensure adherence to best practices in financial management.

Experience / Qualification

  1. Bachelor’s Degree or HND in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  2. 1–3 years of relevant accounting experience (including internships or NYSC)
  3. Professional certification (ICAN, ACCA, or equivalent) is an added advantage
  4. Basic knowledge of financial reporting and bookkeeping
  5. Experience in retail, hospitality, or similar sectors is an added advantage

Competencies / Skills:

  1. Basic knowledge of accounting principles and financial management
  2. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel) and accounting software
  3. Good analytical and numerical skills
  4. Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  5. Basic understanding of taxation and compliance
  6. Ability to meet deadlines and work under supervision
