Gonzaga Jesuit College founded in 2021 in Okija, Anambra State, Gonzaga Jesuit College is the fourth Jesuit secondary school in Nigeria, following those in Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Lagos. It is run by the Society of Jesus, in collaboration with the Handmaids of the Holy Child Jesus, and welcomes both Christian and non-Christian students.

Job Title: Hostel Parent

Location: Ihiala / Okija, Anambra
Employment Type: Full-time

Job Description

  • They are responsible for the holistic well-being, pastoral care, and discipline of students outside of academic hours, ensuring a supportive environment that promotes character development, academic focus, and healthy community living.
  • The Hostel Parent plays a vital role in providing a safe, nurturing, and structured "home away from home" for boarding students.

Responsibilities

  • Pastoral Care & Well-being: Act as the primary caregiver, monitoring students' physical, emotional, and mental health. Create a warm, inclusive, and supportive atmosphere within the hostel.
  • Routine & Discipline: Enforce the daily boarding schedule, including morning wake-ups, meals, mandatory study hours (prep), inspection routines, and lights-out. Maintain discipline in line with school policies.
  • Safety & Security: Ensure the physical security of the hostel building. Conduct regular roll calls, monitor student movements, manage weekend exeat permits, and respond decisively to emergencies.
  • Administrative Duties: Maintain accurate hostel records (attendance, incident reports, maintenance logs). Write regular pastoral reports for school management and maintain constructive communication with parents regarding their children's welfare.
  • Academic Monitoring: Supervise study sessions, ensuring a quiet and productive environment conducive to learning and homework completion.
  • Health & Hygiene Supervision: Monitor students' personal hygiene, cleanliness of their living spaces, and laundry routines. Coordinate closely with the school clinic/bursary to manage student illnesses, medical appointments, and medication distribution.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Experience: A minimum of 3 years of experience working with youth, preferably in a residential care setting, boarding school, or youth mentorship capacity.
  • First Aid: Basic certification in First Aid and CPR is highly desirable (or a willingness to undergo training).
  • Education: A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree. A background in Education, Guidance and Counseling, Psychology, or Social Work is a major advantage.

  • Empathy & Active Listening: The ability to connect with young people, understand their challenges, and provide sound emotional support and guidance.
  • Organization & Multitasking: Exceptional organizational skills to manage schedules, student medical needs, and building maintenance requests simultaneously.
  • Crisis Management: Calmness and decisiveness under pressure to handle medical emergencies, security alerts, or behavioral crises.
  • Firm but Fair Leadership: Ability to enforce rules consistently and maintain authority while remaining approachable and compassionate.
  • Conflict Resolution: Strong interpersonal skills to mediate disputes among students and maintain a harmonious living environment.

Other Requirements:

  • Collaboration: Ability to work closely with school management, security personnel, facility storekeepers, and the counseling department to ensure smooth hostel operations.
  • Residency Requirement: Must be willing to live on campus full-time during the school term, including working flexible shifts, weekends, and holiday rotations.
  • Impeccable Character: A high level of integrity, emotional maturity, and a clean disciplinary/criminal record (subject to thorough background checks).

Remuneration & Benefits

  • Benefits: Access to contributory pension schemes and comprehensive health insurance coverage.
  • Salary: N150,000 monthly. Competitive monthly gross salary, commensurate with experience and institutional scale.
  • Meals: Complimentary meals in the school dining hall during term time.
  • Accommodation: On-campus accommodation within the boarding house.
