Job Title: Night Shift Medical Doctor

Location: Benin City, Edo

Job Summary

  • The night shift medical doctor is responsible for providing high-quality medical care to patients during overnight hours. The role involves assessing, diagnosing, treating, and monitoring patients, responding to medical emergencies, coordinating with multidisciplinary healthcare teams, and ensuring continuity of care throughout the night shift. The night shift medical doctor must be capable of making sound clinical decisions independently while maintaining professional standards and ensuring patient safety.

Key Responsibilities
Patient Assessment and Clinical Care

  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, examinations, and medical evaluations.
  • Develop and implement appropriate treatment plans.
  • Monitor patient progress and adjust treatment plans as necessary.
  • Diagnose and manage acute and chronic medical conditions.
  • Provide immediate medical intervention for urgent and emergency cases.
  • Prescribe medications and therapies in accordance with established clinical guidelines.

Emergency and Critical Care Management:

  • Respond promptly to medical emergencies and life-threatening situations.
  • Ensure appropriate documentation of emergency interventions.
  • Make timely clinical decisions in high-pressure situations.
  • Participate in resuscitation efforts and emergency response activities.
  • Stabilize critically ill patients and coordinate referrals when necessary.

Inpatient and Ward Coverage:

  • Conduct ward rounds and review admitted patients during the night shift.
  • Monitor patient conditions and address clinical concerns raised by nursing staff.
  • Ensure continuity of care by implementing treatment plans and updating patient records.
  • Review laboratory, radiology, and diagnostic test results.
  • Facilitate patient admissions, transfers, and discharges when required.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Communicate effectively with patients and their families regarding treatment plans and medical conditions.
  • Work closely with nurses, pharmacists, laboratory personnel, radiographers, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Escalate complex cases to consultants or specialists when necessary.
  • Participate in shift handovers and clinical briefings.

Documentation and Record Keeping:

  • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely patient medical records.
  • Document diagnoses, treatment plans, procedures, and clinical outcomes.
  • Ensure confidentiality and security of patient information.
  • Complete incident reports and clinical documentation in compliance with hospital policies.

Quality and Patient Safety:

  • Adhere to clinical protocols, evidence-based medical practices, and ethical standards.
  • Promote patient safety and quality healthcare delivery.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and clinical audits.
  • Report adverse events, medication errors, and safety concerns.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Adhere to infection prevention and control procedures.
  • Comply with occupational health and safety requirements.
  • Maintain valid medical licensure and professional registration.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, healthcare regulations, and professional standards.

Qualifications and Requirements
Education:

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS, MBChB, or equivalent) from a recognized institution.

Professional Requirements

  • Valid practicing license issued by the relevant MedicalCouncil.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Full registration with the appropriate medical council or regulatory authority.

Experience:

  • 2–5 years of post-internship clinical experience preferred.
  • Experience in emergency medicine, internal medicine, family medicine, or hospital practice is highly desirable.
  • Previous experience working night shifts or emergency coverage is an advantage.
